Manila, March 29, 2022, SPA -- A series of short eruptions rocked the Philippines' second-most active volcano in the past 24 hours, generating steam-and-ash-laden plumes as high as 2.4 kilometres, government scientists said Tuesday according to the dpa. At least 5,878 people have fled their homes in five high-risk villages around Taal Volcano in Batangas province, 66 kilometres south of Manila, since Saturday when an eruption first occurred. Three phreatomagmatic bursts, caused by magma and water interacting, occurred at Taal's main crater on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. The agency also recorded eight volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, while the "upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake ... generated plumes 2,400 meters tall," Phivolcs said in its latest bulletin. Alert Level 3 remains in place at Taal Volcano, which "means that there is magmatic intrusion at the main crater that may further drive succeeding eruptions," it added. --SPA 10:24 LOCAL TIME 07:24 GMT 0004 www.spa.gov.sa/w1713841
