OIC Holds Extraordinary Meeting on Afghanistan

Jeddah, Aug. 22, 2021, SPA -- At the invitation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, current Chair of the Islamic Summit, the Executive Committee's permanent representatives of the Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) here held today an extraordinary meeting to discuss the latest developments in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Opening the meeting, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to OIC Dr. Saleh bin Hamad Al-Suhaibani cited calls by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on the Afghani warring parties to resort to reason, tolerance and dialogue and to exert their utmost efforts to achieve peace and security in their war-torn country. He also urged the Afghani leaders to adhere to “Makkah Declaration of Peace in Afghanistan" which sought a comprehensive solution to the Afghan conflict based on Islam's principles of dialogue, reconciliation and tolerance. Al-Suhaibani also underlined the Kingdom's ongoing humanitarian assistance to the Afghani people, citing King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center's (KSrelief) efforts in this regard. He also reiterated the Kingdom's unaltered position on the conflict in Afghanistan which advocates a comprehensive political solution that can put an end to the ongoing crisis, vowing Riyadh's full support for all efforts which can help the Afghani people achieve peace and security in their war-torn country. He conveyed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's call on the international community to intensify and accelerate emergency assistance to the Afghani people and support all efforts seeking peace and prosperity to the country. He also called on the brotherly Afghani people to invest in their country's sectarian and ethnic mosaic and engage in constructive dialogue that seeks a better future for Afghanistan. Al-Suhaibani also urged the OIC's Executive Committee to continue observing developments in Afghanistan closely and to convene whenever needed. For his part, OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen expressed appreciation for the Kingdom, under the leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince, for hold this meeting. He also expressed concerns over reported rising killings and injuries in Afghanistan as a result of infighting, urging more efforts to put an end to violations against women and children.
