San Francisco, Safar 11, 1439, October 31, 2017, SPA -- A 17-year-old girl died Monday from burns she suffered in wildfires that broke out in California earlier this month, becoming the 43rd fatality in the blazes, according to dpa. The teenager and her parents and brother fled the flames in Mendocino County north of San Francisco on October 9. The family tried to escape in two cars, but the fire cut off their path to safety. The 17-year-old and her parents, who remain in hospital with severe burns, were rescued, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The 14-year-old brother died. About 1,000 firefighters remain on duty fighting five fires, but most of the large fires are now contained, state fire authorities said. In addition to killing 43 people, the fires destroyed 8,900 structures, the fire service said. At their peak as many as 100,000 people fled the blazes and more than 11,000 firefighters were on duty. The wildfires, which were spread by powerful winds, were the worst in state history. --SPA 02:49 LOCAL TIME 23:49 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w524298
