Rio de Janeiro, Dhu-AlQa'dah 02, 1436, August 17, 2015, SPA -- Complaining of corruption and a weak economy, hundreds of thousands of Brazilians protested Sunday in demonstrations calling for the ouster of President Dilma Rousseff, according to dpa. The demonstrations in 18 Brazilian states were the largest in months but fell short of the estimated 1.7 million participants in the largest protests to date earlier this year. Police said the number of demonstrators was about 265,000, but organizers said the number was 405,000, the news portal Globo reported. Rousseff, who called a crisis session with her closest ministers, won re-election in October with 51 per cent of the vote, and her second term started in January. The demonstrations were generally peaceful and included flag-waving and the singing of the Brazilian national anthem. There were some individual calls for the military to step in and chase Rousseff from office. --SPA 02:53 LOCAL TIME 23:53 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
