WASHINGTON, Rajab 19, 1436, May 8, 2015, SPA -- The United States said Friday that it is in agreement with Saudi Arabia on a five-day humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict in Yemen but that this depends on the Houthis agreeing to honor the same commitments. “First of all, yesterday, there was an announcement by Saudi Arabia of their intent to establish a five-day ceasefire and humanitarian pause,” State Department spokesperson Jeff Rathke told reporters. “I think that they were clear, as was Secretary of State John Kerry, at the time that humanitarian pause and ceasefire would not commence immediately, that it depended on the Houthis agreeing to honor the same commitments.” Asked whether the United States is in full agreement with the Saudis on their military and comprehensive strategy operations for Yemen, Rathke said that “We’re in very close contact” with the kingdom. “We welcome the intention of Saudi Arabia and their announcement of the ceasefire for humanitarian purposes. We’re in agreement on that. --SPA 01:01 LOCAL TIME 22:01 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
