Jakarta, Sha'ban 29, 1436, June 16, 2015, SPA -- Thousands of villagers were evacuated following the weekend eruption of Mount Sinabung in Indonesia's North Sumatra province, with more expected to follow, officials said Tuesday, according to dpa. "We evacuated around 7,000 people from seven villages to 15 shelters on Monday evening," Subur Tambun, chief of the disaster management agency in Karo district, where the volcano is located. He said the local government has set up 11 new shelters to accommodate the new evacuees, in addition to the four existing shelters where the first evacuees had been relocated. The volcano erupted six times on Saturday, throwing ash up to 2 kilometres into the air, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. Mount Sinabung has erupted intermittently since late 2013. Sixteen people were killed and tens of thousands were temporarily displaced during an intense period of eruptions early last year. --SPA 12:44 LOCAL TIME 09:44 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
