San Salvador, Sha'ban 14, 1436, Jun 1, 2015, SPA -- With more than 600 murders per month, El Salvador is now more dangerous than it was during its civil war, security officials reported Sunday, according to dpa. In May, the Central American country recorded an average of 19.6 homicides per day. During the country's civil war between 1980 and 1992, El Salvador saw an average of 17 deaths per day, according to the United Nations. With more than 60 murders per 100,000 citizens, El Salvador ranks as one of the most violent nations in the world. Gangs are responsible for the majority of the violence. President Salvador Sanchez Ceren, whose first year in office ends on Monday, has faced increased criticism for the security situation. The government has announced that special forces will be used to combat the gang violence. --SPA 02:40 LOCAL TIME 23:40 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
