Jizan, April 11, 2020, SPA -- The agricultural sector in Jazan Region, giving to the Red Sea, at the Southernmost border of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), is a very significant socio-economic tributary to the area, in particular, and the Kingdom, in general, to the point that the region deserves to be called the Food Basket of the Kingdom, and it is moreover promising due to the abundant fresh ground water, rains and flash floods, around the year, the region entertains. The availability of the main components, such as fertile soil and good climate helped in creating a suitable environment for, easily, planting of several and various crops and, at lowest costs. Under the wise leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the government is providing the region with all facilities based on accurately scientific and comprehensive program, especially in the field of land reclaiming, use of up-to-date irrigation approaches, in addition to other agricultural guidance and back up, including expanding the cultivable lands, through pests combat, a matter that rekindled the vegetation, in the region, and consequently agricultural and pastoral activities have flourished. Among the main agricultural food products in the region are: Tomato, cucumber, eggplant, okra, mallow, watercress, green pepper, radish, water melon, sweet melon and pumpkin. The annual food production is put roughly at over 60 thousand tons, per annum, in addition to cash crops such as corn, sesame, millet, peanut, soya beans and coffee. Furthermore, Jazan is taking the advantage of miscellaneous topography and reliefs it enjoys, to overstep into producing equatorial and tropical fruits, mainly mango, fig, banana, guava, orange and grape fruit. Being a natural seaport, Jazan also is a mainstay for fishing and fishery, with about 45 per cent of seafood out of the total annual production of the Kingdom.
