Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 edged 0.2% higher to close at 24,083.51, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.2% to 7,079.50. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.5% to 2,261.27, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.7% to 28,860.25. The Shanghai Composite index gained 0.5% to 3,089.66. Benchmark crude oil rose 63 cents to $59.21 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude oil, the international standard, gained 81 cents to $65.66 a barrel.
