Tropical Storm Fred Moves Away from Cape Verde, Weakens

Miami, Dhu-AlQa'dah 17, 1436, Sep 1, 2015, SPA -- Tropical Storm Fred is moving farther away from the Cape Verde Islands and is expected to weaken in the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. forecasters said Tuesday. The storm's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday were near 100 kilometers per hour (kph). Fred was centered about 350 kilometers northwest of the Cape Verde Islands and was moving west-northwest near 19 kph, said the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). Meanwhile, in the Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Jimena remains a powerful category-4 storm with top winds near 215 kph. According to the NHC, the storm was centered about 1,700 kilometers east of Hilo, Hawaii and was moving west near 20 kph. Also in the Pacific, a tropical depression is expected to become a tropical storm later on Tuesday.
