Washington/New York, Muharram 6, 1436, Oct 30, 2014, SPA -- The US military has deployed about one-quarter of the 4,000 troops it said it would send to West Africa to fight the Ebola epidemic there, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said Thursday, dpa reported. About 1,100 US military personnel have been sent to the region thus far, Hagel said at a Pentagon briefing. Troops are deployed for six months to construct treatment centers and hospitals and train local health care workers, said General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. One of the treatment centers is operational, Hagel said at the briefing. A second one will be open over the coming weekend and two more will be finished by November 27, Hagel said. A 25-bed hospital in Monrovia built by US forces will be fully operational next week, he added. -- SPA 23:17 LOCAL TIME 20:17 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
