United Nations, Muharram 7, 1436, Oct 31, 2014, SPA -- The new U.N. envoy for Syria briefed the Security Council on Tuesday for the first time after visiting countries that could influence a resolution to Syria’s crisis. Staffan de Mistura is the third envoy for Syria since its civil war that has killed more than 200,000 people since it began three years ago. He recently traveled to Iran and Russia to meet with the top two allies to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. U.N. deputy humanitarian chief Kyung-wha Kang told the council that more efforts are needed to help reach the millions in need of assistance. “We cannot continue to watch people die,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his latest statement concerning Syria. --SPA 14:09 LOCAL TIME 11:09 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
