United Nations, January 03, 2019, SPA -- The U.N. Security Council has five new members, with Indonesia, Germany, Belgium, South Africa, and the Dominican Republic beginning their two-year terms. The five new countries on the 15-member council were recognized at a ceremony Wednesday marking the installation of their flags outside the council chamber. Ethiopia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Kazakhstan, and Bolivia completed their terms as 2018 ended. The Security Council is the United Nation’s most powerful body. The United States, China, France, Britain, and Russia are permanent council members, with veto power. Other members are elected by the 193-member General Assembly for two-year terms that are allocated by global regions. --SPA 03:02 LOCAL TIME 00:02 GMT 0022 www.spa.gov.sa/w814635
