OIC Member States Express Deep Concern over Atrocities against the Rohingya, in Myanmar

Jeddah, Dhu-AlHijjah 19, 1438, Sep 10, 2017, SPA -- Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states expressed deep concern over atrocities and systematic actions by the security forces, in Myanmar against the Rohingya Muslim community and developments that displaced more than 270,000 Muslims and forcibly returned them to Bangladesh, while their homes and places of worship have been burned. OIC heads of state and government held a meeting to discuss the latest developments related to the Muslim community of Rohingya, in Myanmar on the sidelines of the First Scientific Summit, in Astana, launched here today under the chairmanship of Turkish President Rajab Tayyeb Erdogan, current president of the Islamic Summit. During the meeting, they called upon the Government of Myanmar to cooperate fully with the International Fact-Finding Mission and to bring perpetrators to justice, urging them to fulfill their obligations under international law, human rights treaties and to take all necessary measures to stop all acts of dispersion and discriminatory practices against Rohingya, in all forms and manifestations, as well as persistent attempts to obliterate their Islamic identity and culture. They also urged the Government of Myanmar to eliminate the root causes of the plight, including the denial of nationality for the Rohingya minority, continuing deprivation and discrimination against them, expressing concern at the massive influx of Rohingya children to Bangladesh, security implications for the Government of Bangladesh and called upon all member states to provide necessary support to Bangladesh, in order to level up to the influx of refugees into its territory. -- SPA 19:02 LOCAL TIME 16:02 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w484533
