Los Angeles, Rabi'I 15, 1438, December 14, 2016, SPA -- A British man who tried to grab a police officer's gun to shoot Donald Trump at a Las Vegas rally in June was sentenced Tuesday to a year and a day in prison, federal prosecutors said, according to dpa. Michael Sandford tried to take a gun from a Las Vegas officer at a campaign rally for Trump at the Treasure Island casino hotel June 18. Sandford told authorities he wanted to shoot Trump, saying the real estate mogul was a "racist" and "needs to die," according to a report by federal law enforcement cited by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. In a deal with prosecutors, he pled guilty in September to charges of being an undocumented immigrant in possession of a firearm and a count of impeding government business. "You're not a hardened criminal. I don't think this was a serious attempt," Judge James Mahan told Sandford at the sentencing hearing in Las Vegas Tuesday, Channel 3 News reported. Sandford, who defence lawyers say is autistic, has been reportedly receiving treatment for mental illness while in federal custody. With credit for time served, Sandford will likely be free in four months and then be deported to Britain. --SPA 01:05 LOCAL TIME 22:05 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w289958
