Taipei, Dhu-AlHijjah 12, 1437, Sep 14, 2016, SPA -- Super Typhoon Meranti caused flooding and left almost 170,000 households in Taiwan without electricity on Wednesday, as the eye of the storm passes close by the south of the island nation, dpa reported. Since late Tuesday, powerful winds and torrential rains have hit the east and south of the country, leading to schools and most offices remaining closed. On the Hengchun Peninsula, floods have left roads unusable. Hundreds of residents in mountainous areas have also been evacuated, according to the local Pingtung government. Some 169,000 households are waiting for power to be restored after power poles had been knocked over, according to Taiwan's Central Emergency Operation Centre. Ferry services to offshore islands and some train connections have also been suspended. --SPA 10:25 LOCAL TIME 07:25 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
