UN Human Rights' Council Holds Emergency Session, on Gaza Events

Geneva, Ramadan 03, 1439, May 18, 2018, SPA -- United Nations' Human Rights Council held here today an emergency session to discuss the events, in Gaza and the vicious aggression by the Israeli occupying forces against the unarmed Palestinian people, resulting in the death of many dozens of martyrs and the injury of hundreds of innocent civilians. The meeting was held upon request of the State of Palestine and the United Arab Emirates, on behalf of the Group of Arab States. The request was supported by 26 member states of the council and 24 observer states. At the opening of the meeting, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zaid bin Ra'ad al-Hussein called for the formation of an international commission to investigate the events, in Gaza, covering the period beginning from March 30 and to bring those responsible for the killing of Palestinian civilians to justice and hold them accountable. For his part, the UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories Michael Lynk, condemned the use of excessive and disproportionate force by the Israeli occupation forces against peaceful Palestinian demonstrators, considering that a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions to protect civilians, under occupation. -- SPA 17:26 LOCAL TIME 14:26 GMT 0009 www.spa.gov.sa/w690484
