New York, Rabi'I 15, 1438, December 14, 2016, SPA -- The Syrian government and its allies, Russia and Iran, are behind "the conquest of and carnage in Aleppo," Samantha Power, US ambassador to the UN, told the UN Security Council on Tuesday, according to dpa. She said the three countries are responsible for what UN humanitarian aid spokesman Jens Laerke called the "complete meltdown of humanity" and are showing no mercy to civilians on the ground. "Are you truly incapable of shame? Is there literally nothing that can shame you?" Power said. "Is there no act of barbarism, no execution of a child that gets under your skin, that just creeps you out a little bit? Is there nothing that you will not lie about or justify?" Vitaly Churkin, Russian ambassador to the UN, shot back at Power saying she delivered a statement "as if she was Mother Teresa." "Please remember what country you're representing - remember your own country's track record and then you can start opining from the position of moral supremacy," Churkin said. During the briefing, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned that the UN had received "credible reports of scores of civilians being killed either by intense bombardment or summary executions by pro-government forces." Ban said that civilians, including women and children, were being rounded up and executed in four neighbourhoods of eastern Aleppo. The UN had no access to the city making independent verification impossible, Ban said, noting, however, that the UN was confident that the civilians in opposition-controlled pockets of eastern Aleppo numbered "in the thousands." Churkin rejected allegations of atrocities being committed against civilians in Aleppo, noting that Russia had received no such information. In Washington, US State Department spokesman John Kirby spoke of some "clearly disturbing" reports coming out of Aleppo. "I mean we're seeing now reports of people being executed in the streets. Just killed because of they're there. And that's despicable," Kirby said. He said that the "brutality of the regime and support that [it's] getting from Russia and Iran has got to stop," and added that even if Aleppo fell, it was "not the end of the war in Syria." Earlier on Tuesday, rebel officials and the Russian ambassador to the UN confirmed a deal to evacuate the rebel enclave in eastern Aleppo. Civilian activists and medical workers in the city have pleaded to be allowed leave over recent days, saying they fear for their lives if they fall into the hands of government forces, who have a grim reputation for disappearances and torture. UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura told reporters after the Security Council meeting that the military acceleration in the Syrian conflict would not end with the battle of Aleppo and low-intensity guerilla fighting could continue for years. He said that Aleppo should be seen as a "tragic opportunity" to return to political talks. "This is actually the best moment to insist on a peace process being restarted," de Mistura said. --SPA 02:16 LOCAL TIME 23:16 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w289974
