Saudi Arabia Stresses Need for Emergency Session of the UN General Assembly on Syria

United Nations, Rabi'I 11, 1438, Dec 10, 2016, SPA -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has stressed the need to hold an emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly which holds the responsibility of protecting peace and security in Syria. The military operations launched by the Syrian regime and its allies threatened the security and peace in Syria in light of inability of the Security Council to address the situation and make active resolutions. Ambassador Abdullah bin Yahya Al-Moallami, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, delivered the Kingdom's speech before the General Assembly meeting to vote on a draft resolution which is presented by the delegation of Canada regarding the humanitarian situation in Syria. "I would like to thank this meeting for discussing the dangerous humanitarian situation in Syria. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia highly appreciates efforts exerted by sponsors of the resolution, particularly Canada," he said. "Based on the tragic situation in Aleppo and the Security Council's inability to handle with the situation and make active resolutions regarding the Syrian issue, it is necessary to hold an emergency special session which holds the General Assembly responsibility to protect peace and security that are threatened by the military operations launched by the Syrian regime and its allies," Al-Moallami added.
