Limburg, Germany, Rabi'I 10, 1438, December 09, 2016, SPA -- A young man who allegedly beat and severely injured a taxi driver to avoid paying a 5.40-euro (6.10-dollar) fare went on trial for attempted murder Thursday in a court in the western German town of Limburg. The then 21-year-old defendent was travelling by taxi after a night on the town in June, when he exited at his destination without paying. Confronted by the 57-year-old driver, the defendant allegedly knocked the driver to the ground and pummelled him with punches and kicks to the head. In addition to a various broken facial bones and lacerations to his face, the victim also suffered a concussion, dpa reported. The alleged attacker stated in court he had "zero memory" of the incident, and could not even recall why his hands were swollen the next day. The prosecution have gone into the case with the knowledge that the defendant was intoxicated to the extreme, and are assuming greatly diminished capacity. Analysis following the incident estimated blood alcohol levels of between 2.8 and 4.4.
