Madrid, Dhu-AlHijjah 24, 1437, Sep 25, 2016, SPA -- Exit polls showed that Spain's conservative People's Party (PP) could win an overall majority in the parliament of Galicia, while the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) seems to have come out on top in the Basque Country, in regional elections on Sunday, dpa reported. With 45.5 per cent of the vote in Galicia, the PP could take between 38 and 41 of the 75 seats in the regional parliament, the polls carried out by Galician public television showed. The grass-roots populist Podemos movement achieved 19.5 per cent, beating the Socialists, who won 18.9 per cent, giving both between 14 and 16 seats, while the Galician nationalists could garner five or six seats. In the Basque Country, the nationalists, who have been the ruling power in Basque Country since 2012, won 36.5 per cent of the vote, according to exit polls released by Basque public television, giving it 27-30 seats in the 75-seat parliament. Basque separatists are on course to win 16-18 seats, followed by Podemos on 13-15. The Socialists came fourth with eight to 10 seats, with the PP in fifth on seven to eight seats. The liberal Ciudadanos (Citizens) could gain only one seat. Some 4 million were eligible to vote in the polls that could affect a political stalemate in the capital, Madrid. -- SPA 23:12 LOCAL TIME 20:12 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
