LondonCity, Dhu-AlHijjah 22, 1437, Sep 23, 2016, SPA -- The leader of Britain's opposition Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, urged the party's 650,000 members to unite against the ruling Conservatives late Friday ahead of Saturday's expected announcement that he has been re-elected party leader, dpa reported. "Whatever the result, whatever the margin, we all have a duty to unite, cherish and build our movement," Corbyn said in a video message posted on Twitter. "We've presented the policies that our country needs: 500 billion [pounds] of investment in every region of the country, a national investment bank, a million good new jobs, a million good new homes, renationalization of the National Health Service, proper workplace rights ..." "There is so much consensus in the Labour Party over these policies," he said. Veteran left-winger Corbyn, 67, was forced to join a contest to remain in power after a revolt against his leadership by most of Labour's 220 lawmakers. He and his single challenger, Owen Smith, fought an often bitter campaign that many analysts expected to widen divisions in the centre-left party. "It's been robust and at times difficult," Corbyn said of the campaigning on Friday, but he said Labour had become "the biggest left-of-centre party in Europe and gained support from people we lost decades ago," Labour was "winning the argument that austerity is a political choice, not an economic necessity," he said. Corbyn also saw most of his former shadow cabinet resign this summer, but he retains strong backing from several large trade unions. During the election campaign, he rejected his critics' accusation that Labour was incapable of winning a parliamentary majority under his leadership. Many Labour lawmakers also accused him of weak campaigning for Britain to remain in the European Union ahead of the Brexit referendum in June. Corbyn was also accused of poor handling of allegations of anti-Semitism within the party and for opposing the renewal of Britain's Trident system of submarine-based nuclear missiles during a parliamentary debate, despite Labour officially supporting the retention of Trident. He won the previous Labour leadership in September 2015 with almost 60 per cent of the 422,000 votes cast, beating three other candidates. -- SPA 22:47 LOCAL TIME 19:47 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
