Tokyo, Dhu-AlHijjah 17, 1437, Sep 19, 2016, SPA -- Residents in southern Japan are bracing for Typhoon Malakas Monday as the storm bears down on the island of Kyushu, bringing heavy winds and torrential rain. Weather authorities warned of mudslides, flooding, high waves and swollen rivers in western and southern Japan as the season's 16th typhoon is projected to hit Kagoshima prefecture overnight, dpa reported. The typhoon could dump rainfall of up to 80 millimeters per hour in some regions, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Rainfall of 109.5 millimeters per hour was already recorded in the Kyushu town of Takanabe on Monday evening. As of 8 pm (1100 GMT), the eye of the storm was 90 kilometers south-west of Makurazaki City, travelling east-north-east at 30 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 162 kilometers per hour and gusts of 216 kilometers per hour. --SPA 19:17 LOCAL TIME 16:17 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
