Blantyre, Dhu-AlQa'dah 28, 1437, August 31, 2016, SPA -- A former Malawian justice minister was sentenced Tuesday to 13 years in prison for planning the murder of a civil servant, state-run Malawi Broadcasting Corporation reported, according to dpa. Ralph Kasambara was found guilty of a conspiracy to kill then national budget director Paul Mphwiyo, who was shot in 2013 but survived his wounds. A former soldier and an entrepreneur were sentenced to 26 years each for the shooting. The investigations that followed the shooting contributed to exposing a massive corruption scandal known as Cashgate. The plundering of tens of millions of dollars in public money prompted donors to cut aid to the southern African country. More than 70 people were charged in connection with the scandal, including entrepreneurs, officials and civil servants. --SPA 00:04 LOCAL TIME 21:04 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
