Rome, Dhu-AlQa'dah 20, 1437, Aug 23, 2016, SPA -- Libya's coastguard and navy will receive training from the European Union's naval mission in the Mediterranean to fight migrant smuggling, according to an agreement signed on Tuesday, dpa reported. Three separate training packages should take place at sea, on the EU mainland or in Libya, and aboard Libyan patrol boats, the EU's Eunavfor Med Sophia mission said in a statement. They should help Libyan authorities "tackle the criminal organisations that take advantage of smuggling and trafficking in human beings," Eunavfor's Commander, Italian Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino, said. "This will contribute to prevent further loss at sea," he added. The EU naval mission was launched in May 2015 with an original mandate to go after human smugglers, but also perform sea rescues. In June its remit was expanded to train Libyan sea forces and help enforce a United Nations arms embargo. Eunavfor's flagship, the Italian aircraft carrier Garibaldi, hosted Monday an offshore summit between Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande. -- SPA 20:27 LOCAL TIME 17:27 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
