Johannesburg, Ramadan 17, 1437, June 22, 2016, SPA -- Aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Wednesday accused the United Nations of not protecting civilians in South Sudan, saying that an adequate response to violence inside one of its camps could have prevented dozens of deaths, dpa reported. At least 18 people were initially reported to have been killed and more than 25,000 to have fled the camp in Malakal in the north after inter-ethnic clashes erupted there on February 17 and 18. MSF said varying reports put the number of civilian casualties at up to 65, while 108 were reported to have been wounded. More than 3,700 shelters, or one-third of the site, were burned down. "Despite a strong military presence at the ... site, as well as a clear mandate to protect civilians, the United Nations mission in South Sudan ... failed in its duty to safeguard the people living at the site," MSF said. The UN had allowed weapons to enter the camp and was slow to quell the violence, according to the report. The Malakal camp housed nearly 50,000 people prior to the fighting there in February. Dpa was unable to reach the UN mission to South Sudan for comment. A civil conflict erupted between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and his political rival Riek Machar in December 2013, killing tens of thousands and displacing more than 2 million people. --ٍSPA 20:30 LOCAL TIME 17:30 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
