Basel, Switzerland, Sha'ban 10, 1437, May 17, 2016, SPA -- Goal-line technology is to be used for the first time in European competition when Liverpool take on Sevilla in Wednesday's Europa League final in Basel, governing body UEFA said Tuesday, according to dpa. The Hawk-Eye system, which is already used in the English Premier League and German Bundesliga, is to debut on the European stage ahead of use in the May 28 Champions League final and the upcoming Euro 2016 in France. It is based on seven cameras covering the goal and will be used in conjunction with additional assistant referees (AARs) off the pitch. "Goal-line technology and additional assistant referees complement each other perfectly," UEFA's chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina was quoted as saying. "The main task of the AARs is not to control the goal line and decide whether a ball has crossed it; rather they are responsible for monitoring everything that is happening in the penalty area overall, aiding the main referee in making important decisions in the box." Goal-line technology will be used in every Champions League match from the play-off round onwards next season and could also be introduced for the Europa League group stages, UEFA said. --SPA 22:11 LOCAL TIME 19:11 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
