N'Djamena, Safar 23, 1437, Dec 5, 2015, SPA -- At least 30 people were killed after three suicide attacks on a town on an island in Lake Chad on Saturday, a security official said. The attack on the town of Koulkoua is believed to have been carried out by members of insurgent group Boko Haram, the official, who asked to remain anonymous, told dpa. The dead include the three suicide bombers. Some 80 people were injured in the attack. Chad's government instituted a state of emergency in the Lake Chad region in November, saying the area had become a gathering point for Boko Haram militants. The state of emergency empowers the governor of the area to prohibit the movement of people and vehicles and to order searches of homes day and night. More than 5,000 soldiers have been deployed on islands and lakeside villages there. --SPA 19:30 LOCAL TIME 16:30 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
