Rome, Safar 23, 1437, Dec 5, 2015, SPA -- The volcano Mount Etna continued to erupt Saturday, sending out a plume of ash that forced the closure of Catania airport on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily. On Thursday, Calabria's regional airport on the Italian mainland was closed after the 3,350-metre-high volcano experienced one of its most powerful eruptions for decades, covering the area in a cloud of ash, dpa reported. Mount Etna, located on the eastern coast of Sicily, is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. It frequently produces small eruptions with fountains of ash widely visible. Its biggest eruption in recent times, which lasted 473 days and ended in March 1993, produced a lava stream that threatened to engulf Zafferana Etnea, one of the towns located on its slopes. Emergency action by authorities managed to divert and stop the lava stream. --SPA 17:53 LOCAL TIME 14:53 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
