Paris, Dhu-AlHijjah 08, 1436, September 22, 2015, SPA -- African countries and the Balkans could become major sources of migrants, adding to the flow from current hot spots in the Middle East, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said Tuesday, according to dpa. The group of industrialized nations said in a policy paper that 44 per cent of adults in Nigeria and 37 per cent in Senegal intend to emigrate permanently. Nearly 40 per cent of Albanians had the same wish, and rates were also high in Serbia, Ukraine and Afghanistan. While data for these countries comes from a 2013 survey, OECD said "it suggests that pressure is high in a number of them and could possibly translate into large migration flows in the near future." In sub-Saharan Africa, demographic factors and economic conditions were the biggest reasons why people want to leave, while the Balkans face high rates of poverty and unemployment, especially among the Roma minority. The OECD also highlighted that 300,000 people from Afghanistan, Turkey and Pakistan who have reached Turkey were planning to move on the European Union. In addition, there are currently 2 million Syrian refugees in Turkey and more than 1.1 million in Lebanon, where increasing poverty and lack of work have been fuelling the outflow to Europe. --SPA 14:54 LOCAL TIME 11:54 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
