Paris, Dhu-AlQa'dah 16, 1436, August 31, 2015, SPA -- French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve arrived in the northern port city of Calais on Monday to assess security issues at the popular crossing point for migrants hoping to reach Britain, dpa reported. The visit, which EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos and Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans will also attend, was scheduled when a new Franco-British security agreement was signed earlier this month. The agreement included measures to clamp down on illegal crossings, such as additional fencing, surveillance cameras, infrared technology and floodlights. It also included plans for a joint operations centre for British officers to work alongside French border control. European officials welcomed the agreement, but increasingly desperate attempts to cross the English Channel have underscored heightening migration pressure across Europe. Some 3,000 migrants are estimated to be camped in Calais. Early on Monday, Cazeneuve and Valls visited the Jules-Ferry refugee centre, where some 110 refugees are lodged. The centre also offers showers and food. --SPA 12:24 LOCAL TIME 09:24 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
