United Nations, Dhu-AlHijjah 23, 1435, Oct 17, 2014, SPA -- Spain was elected to the final available U.N. Security Council seat on Thursday, with Turkey failing in its bid to join the U.N. body. In the first and second ballots, neither Spain nor Turkey received the required support of two-third of all General Assembly members present, or a minimum of 129 votes if all 193 members participate. Spain finally was elected on the third ballot, and will join Venezuela, Malaysia, New Zealand and Angola on the 15-country council on January 1. The five new members will replace South Korea, Luxembourg, Australia, Argentina, and Rwanda and will serve through 2016. --SPA 11:26 LOCAL TIME 08:26 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
