Washington, Dhu-AlQa'dah 23, 1435, Sep 18, 2014, SPA -- The World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday at least 700 more Ebola cases emerged in West Africa in one week, a statistic that shows the outbreak is accelerating. Just three weeks ago, the number of new cases was around 500 for a one-week period. The number of people believed to have been killed by the virus now is more than 2,600, an increase of about 200 from the last estimate, the U.N. health agency said. Most deaths have been in Liberia. The new WHO figures show that the disease is thought to have sickened more than 5,300 people. Just under half of those cases were recorded in the last three weeks.” At least 318 healthcare workers have ben sickened, and about half have died. The outbreak struck Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea before moving into Nigeria and Senegal. --SPA 18:38 LOCAL TIME 15:38 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
