Cairo, Muharram 8, 1437, Oct 21, 2015, SPA -- UN Libya envoy Bernardino Leon Wednesday insisted that the country's peace process would continue despite the internationally recognized parliament rejecting a planned national unity government. Leon cast doubt on the parliament's decision, saying it had been announced by the assembly's speaker but some 70 lawmakers had signed a statement saying no vote had been taken on the planned peace deal, dpa reported. "This has created some confusion and I am coming here today ... to insist that the process goes on, that there is no chance for small groups or personalities to hijack this process," Leon told a press conference in Tunis. Libyan parliamentarians on Monday said the assembly, meeting in the far eastern city of Tobruk, had rejected one of the deputy prime ministers proposed by Leon and demanded a return to a previous draft of the peace agreement. The UN Security Council on Friday threatened sanctions against parties undermining "the successful conclusion" of Libya's transition process. Leon said the July draft of the agreement was "not a final text" and going back to it was "not an option." He would "convene new meetings in the coming days to listen to proposals and ideas from the Libyans involved in the process and those outside the process to go on," he added. -- SPA 22:12 LOCAL TIME 19:12 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
