United Nations, Dhu-AlQa'dah 15, 1435, Sep 10, 2014, SPA -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will convene leaders gathering in New York City for the annual General Assembly to highlight the urgent needs and required response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Ban spoke Monday with U.S. President Barack Obama and discussed the need to urgently intensify international efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday. The spokesman also said that given the severity of the West African crisis, the secretary-general has requested that Ameerah Haq, the undersecretary-general for field support, postpone her planned departure from the United Nations, and that she has agreed. Meanwhile, the U.N. chief’s special representative for Liberia, Karin Landgren, briefed the Security Council on Tuesday, warning that the Ebola crisis has become complex, with political, security, economic, and social implications that will continue to affect the country well beyond the current health emergency. --SPA 16:46 LOCAL TIME 13:46 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
