Geneva, Aug. 24, 2021, SPA -- Addressing the emergency session of the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council on the situation in Afghanistan, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) called today for working to achieve the aspirations of the Afghan people and giving priority to their interests through a comprehensive political and reconciliation process. A joint statement on behalf of the GCC countries was delivered by the Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations in Geneva Dr. Yousef Abdulkarim Bucheery. He called on all parties to work to achieve stability and security and preserve lives and property, stressing that justice, respect for human rights and the rule of law are foundations for national reconciliation and for achieving sustainable peace in Afghanistan. The statement urged all states, international agencies and donors to mobilize urgent humanitarian support that meets the needs of civilians in Afghanistan.
