Athens, Aug 6, 2021, SPA -- Wildfires throughout Greece that have been raging for days amid unseasonably high temperatures were burning more fiercely on Friday, fanned by strong westerly winds. The powerful winds began early in the morning and fanned several fires on Friday. North of Athens, the authorities called on residents in several towns to leave the region. Members of the security forces moved from house to house to make sure no one had been left behind, dpa reported. In the past 24 hours, 86 new forest fires have started burning across the country, the Greek fire brigade said. Huge clouds of yellow smoke are visible even dozens of kilometers from the flames and there is a smell of burning, and ash rains down. Fires also continue to burn on the island of Euboea and in the Peloponnese, with several out of control. On Euboea, the inhabitants of the village of Agia Anna in the north-east of the island had to be brought to safety by boat. Fires are also burning in the north-west, and villages have also been evacuated. --SPA 15:36 LOCAL TIME 12:36 GMT 0015 www.spa.gov.sa/w1597443
