Farasan Island Sanctuary Registered in UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program

Riyadh, Sept. 15, 2021, SPA -- The National Committee for Education, Culture and Science and Saudi Heritage Preservation Society announced registering the Farasan Island Marine Sanctuary in UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Program (MAB). The registration was made during the 33rd meeting of the coordination committee of the program that was held on Monday, said the announcement, citing the efforts by Saudi Heritage Preservation Society for three years on the candidacy program and meeting all standards required for registration, especially that Farasan Island and its beaches enjoy a unique environmental diversity and wildlife. The step is expected to contribute to realizing the aspirations of the Ministry of Culture and targets of the Saudi Vision 2030 through improving and enhancing the presence of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in international events, mainly UNESCO lists, in addition to improving the quality of life on Farasan Island through applying MAB’s standards and criteria. The step also aimed at achieving the aspirations of the Ministry of Culture and Saudi Vision 2030 to improve interaction between man and the environment, and as a coronation of efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s delegation to UNESCO under the presidency of Princess Haifa bint Abdulaziz Al-Mogrin, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO. --SPA 20:12 LOCAL TIME 17:12 GMT 0024 www.spa.gov.sa/w1618742
