Vienna, Shawwal 20, 1437, Jul 25, 2016, SPA -- Police have detained 17 people in several countries who are suspected of having smuggled an estimated 1,000 migrants from Hungary to Germany, investigators in Austria said Monday. The group allegedly transported refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran in small groups in cars. They had to pay about 700 euros (770 dollars) to be transported from Hungary via Austria to Germany, and 2,400 euros if they wanted to go to France, dpa reported. The smuggling network consisted of Polish and German drivers, as well as Chechens living in Austria, according to police. Investigators started uncovering the group in September. Last week, the final seven suspects were detained in Austria, Budapest and Berlin. Police searched a dozen homes and found not only money but also weapons and jewellery. Investigators are probing whether the men were also involved in other crimes. --SPA 19:55 LOCAL TIME 16:55 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
