New York, Muharram 21, 1437, November 03, 2015, SPA -- UN officials, diplomats and media rights experts called for greater accountability for the murder of journalists on Monday, which marked the international day to end impunity for crimes against journalists. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said journalists must have the right to report freely, noting that more than 700 journalists have died in the line of duty in the past decade, many of them in deliberate attacks. But only 10 per cent of journalist killings have been fully investigated, he said. "Such impunity deepens fear among journalists and enables governments to get away with censorship," Ban said in a statement. During a panel discussion at UN headquarters organized by Greece and Lithuania, speakers condemned violence against journalists, saying democracies can't function without freedom of expression. --SPA 03:28 LOCAL TIME 00:28 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
