Beijing, Rabi'II 30, 1437, February 09, 2016, SPA -- Officials in China confirmed the country's first case of the fast-spreading Zika virus, state-run Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday according to dpa. A 34-year-old from southeastern Jiangxi province was infected while traveling in Venezuela last month, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said. He returned to China last week after experiencing fever, headache and dizziness, and has been in a hospital quarantine since Friday, the report said. The mosquito-borne virus, which gained ground in Brazil in recent months and has since spread to dozens of countries, is associated with birth defects, although the link has not been proven. The World Health Organization has declared the Zika virus a public health emergency of international concern and said that up to 4 million people could be infected within the next 12 months in the hard-hit Americas. --SPA 02:49 LOCAL TIME 23:49 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
