WASHINGTON, Rabi'II 18, 1437, January 28, 2016, SPA -- U.S. President Barack Obama Thursday created a new federal task force led by Vice President Joe Biden to accelerate cancer research. Obama signed a presidential memorandum establishing the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force. The memorandum said that the goal is to double the rate of progress and treatment and prevention. The Pentagon, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are among about a dozen federal agencies involved. The group will submit a report to the president at the end of December - just before Obama leaves office. Biden announced last year, when he said that he would not run for president in 2016, that he would spend his final months in office working on curing cancer. His son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer last year. --SPA 19:51 LOCAL TIME 16:51 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
