United Nations, Shawwal 22, 1436, Aug 7, 2015, SPA -- The top U.N. envoy in Afghanistan condemned the killing of at least eight civilians and the injuring of more than 200 in an attack in Kabul Friday. A truck full of explosives detonated in the Shah Shahid area of the city overnight when people were home asleep, the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a statement. Among those killed and wounded were women and children. Nicholas Haysom, the head of UNAMA, reiterated the world body's calls for the immediate ban of weapons that kill and maim indiscriminately, and to cease attacks in civilian-populated areas. "Those responsible for such attacks must be held accountable," Haysom said. "UNAMA extends its condolences to the families of all of those killed in the explosion and wishes a speedy recovery to those who were injured." --SPA 20:25 LOCAL TIME 17:25 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
