Washington, Shawwal 17, 1435, Aug 13, 2014, SPA -- More than two months worth of rain fell in two hours on New York's Long Island on Wednesday, causing flash floods that left cars trapped on roads turned into rivers during the morning rush hour. With the storm expected to end mid-morning, a total of 32.75 centimeters of rain was measured in Islip, more than the town's normal total for June, July, and August of 29.38 centimeters, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. "They had more than two months of rainfall in two hours," NWS spokesman Christopher Vaccaro said. "It's really quite a dangerous situation. Heavy rainfall coupled with the morning commute is a problem." Local television showed images of cars submerged up to their windows, and fire-department teams in boats rescued drivers in one town. Flash-flood warnings for Long Island and southeastern Connecticut remained in effect through the morning. The weather system was the same one that drenched Washington and Baltimore on Tuesday. --SPA 17:46 LOCAL TIME 14:46 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
