London, Rabi'I 18, 1436, Jan 9, 2015, SPA -- Winds with hurricane force battered northern Britain Friday leaving 75,000 homes without electricity, suspending train services in Scotland, blocking roads with downed trees and making airport landings perilous, dpa reported. Gusts of 181 kilometres per hour were registered at Stornoway in Scotland's Western Isles - the strongest since records started being kept there in 1970. The Met Office has flagged a yellow 'be prepared' warning for most of the northern region. The gales are powered by a 400-kilometre per hour jet stream coming across the Atlantic. -- SPA 18:31 LOCAL TIME 15:31 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
