Istanbul, Dhu-AlQa'dah 12, 1435, Sep 7, 2014, SPA -- Ten workers were killed during the construction of a 36-storey building in Istanbul when an elevator plummeted from one of the top floors, prompting protests Sunday that police dispersed with tear gas, dpa reported. Istanbul Governor Hueyin Avni Mutlu, quoted by the Dogan news agency, said the incident took place after normal working hours on Saturday night. Investigators would look into why safety rules had been ignored, he said. Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse 1,000 leftist demonstrators who gathered near the site in the upscale Mecidiyekoy neighborhood to protest what they said are poor working conditions. -- SPA 22:58 LOCAL TIME 19:58 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
