MANILA, Shawwal 21, 1435, August 17, 2014, SPA -- A Philippine police official says militants have abducted a government mechanic and killed his assistant, who tried to run away, in a heavily secured provincial government compound in the southern Philippines, AP reported. Senior Superintendent Abraham Orbita, who heads the police force in Sulu province, says about 30 gunmen breached a perimeter wall of the provincial government compound late Saturday and took chief mechanic Ronald Pelegrin at gunpoint from the motorpool under cover of darkness. Orbita said Sunday that the gunmen also took Pelegrin's deputy, Dante Avilla, but the latter resisted and was shot and killed by the militants when he tried to run away. The militants still hold a number of Filipino and foreign captives in their jungle encampments, including four Europeans. --SPA 14:10 LOCAL TIME 11:10 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
