New Delhi, Shawwal 25, 1435, Aug 21, 2014, SPA -- Nearly 1,000 extra Indian troops are being sent to border areas of the north-eastern state of Assam after violence there left 12 people dead and displaced thousands of others, dpa cited state authorities as saying. A curfew was imposed in the Golaghat district on the borders of Nagaland after three people died during a police operation on Wednesday. Violence erupted last week when Naga tribespeople killed nine Assamese villagers over a long-standing land dispute. "The situation is tense but under control. Protests are being reported from curfew-bound areas," Assam Home Secretary GD Tripathy said. There are an estimated 15,000 troops already stationed in the whole of Golaghat district. --SPA 16:40 LOCAL TIME 13:40 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
