Brussels, Ramadan 18, 1435, Jul 15, 2014, SPA -- The European Union and Morocco buried the hatchet Tuesday in a row over fishing rights with the finalization of an agreement allowing EU vessels to resume fishing in Moroccan waters after a halt of more than two years, dpa reported. The deal, under which the bloc will pay Morocco to fish in its waters, was agreed in principle in December but was only just ratified by Rabat. The standoff dates back to December 2011 when the European Parliament rejected a similar arrangement. As a result, all EU fishing boats had to withdraw from Moroccan waters while Rabat was deprived of annual payments for fishing licences. The agreement affects up to 120 fishing vessels from 11 EU countries that will now be able to catch 80,000 tons of small fish, according to the European Commission. Additional quotas are set for species such as tuna. --SPA 19:12 LOCAL TIME 16:12 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
