United Nations, 06 Ramadan, 1435, 03 July, 2014, SPA - - The U.N. refugee agency on Wednesday said 75,000 people since mid-June fled from Pakistan to Afghanistan to avoid the ongoing Pakistani military fights against militants in the North Waziristan tribal region. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other partners have provided food and basic relief items, vaccinated thousands of children against polio and measles, and are in the process of acquiring life-saving medicines to 10,000 patients. “However, sanitation, clean drinking water and medical care are in short supply, and although local communities have generously welcomed the displaced, already scarce resources are reach capacity,” said UNHCR. UNHCR’s representative in Afghanistan, Bo Schack, and U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, Mark Bowden, visited one of the host communities in Khost on Wednesday to see the situation first-hand. The agencies operating in the host communities will request $20 million for six months to provide assistance to 10,000 families in Khost and 3,000 in Paktika. --SPA 12:12 LOCAL TIME 09:12 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
